This package adds the ability to use underscores (_) to add italics and bold type, similar to simple markup languages (eg. Markdown). Just add \usepackage{easyformat} to your preamble and you'll write: _italic_, __bold__ and ___bolditalic___!

easyformat – Easily add boldface, italics and smallcaps
This package allows the use of underscores and circumflexes to begin resp. end italic, bold or SMALLCAPS formatting, as an alternative to the standard LaTeX \textit{…}, \textbf{…} and/or \textsc{…}.
The meaning of underscore and circumflex in mathmode remain the same.
