eqnarray209 – A fix for LaTeX 2.09 eqnarray
The package redefines the eqnarray in default LaTeX, both to remove the ridiculous space around the second column, and to correct a few other bugs.
That which the package mends, is dealt with in the (required) package amsmath, in the form of several alternative environments. Note that the (LaTeX 2e) eqnarray package seems not to deal with the spacing issue.
