noprot – Avoid the need for protection
An approach to reducing the need for \protect. The package re-writes the \thanks, \caption and sectioning commands (\chapter, \section, …), \addcontentsline, \addtocontents and \bibitem, to suppress the expansion of their arguments when those arguments are written to the .aux file.
The mechanism is not entirely satisfactory: there is still a problem with things written with the \mark* commands, and one loses the facility of making direct reference to the current page (i.e., one must use \pageref for such things).
