Files distributed with this package
totpages.ins        This is the installation script that will produce
                    the style file totpages.sty when run through LaTeX
                    or TeX.
totpages.dtx        documented source file of the totpages package.
readme.txt          This file.

All files in the totpages package may be distributed under the terms of
the LaTeX Project Public License.

To use this package, you'll have to have everyshi.sty and keyval.sty
installed.  They are available from CTAN and may need additional
packages themselves.

 1) Run TeX or LaTeX on totpages.ins.
 2) Put the resulting totpages.sty somewhere where LaTeX will find it.
 3) Make sure everyshi.sty and keyval.sty are available

 For documentation, run LaTeX on totpages.dtx.

 File totexmpl.tex contains an example on how to use packages totpages.

tot­pages – Count pages in a doc­u­ment, and re­port last page num­ber

The pack­age counts the ac­tual pages in the doc­u­ment (as op­posed to re­port­ing the num­ber of the last page, as does last­page). The counter it­self may be shipped out to the DVI file. The pack­age uses the ev­eryshi pack­age for its task.
