With natbib V8.3, a new "merging" feature was added, essentially for use with ReVTeX. However, there is a bug that makes it incompatible with LaTeX files written for earlier versions. This bug is now fixed, so that the default works as before. The new code and the bug fix are written by Arthur Ogawa.
