Florilegium – Procedurally generated floral page margins for LuaLaTeX, with a TikZ library for pdfLaTeX
florilegium grows a floral garden in the margin of every page of a LuaLaTeX document. Nothing is an image: every petal, leaf and stem is a curve computed in Lua while the page is processed, painted like an ink wash, and written straight into the PDF.
Each plant in the margin is a species sampled from a genome of botanical traits, and its flowers bring relevant visitors (e.g., bees, butterflies, beetles, snails, birds). The garden fills whatever space the text leaves, can put a flower beside each heading, ages from spring to autumn over a document, and follows the outer margin on two-sided pages. There are also decorated initials, ornaments in the text, a geometric and a mathematical theme, and density and intensity settings.
A TikZ library draws the same species as pics, in pure TikZ, under pdfLaTeX or through the Lua engine under LuaLaTeX.
The package was made with the assistance of AI (Claude), as its README and manual explain.
