Summary description: Mathematical tools to use with amsmath
Announcement text:
For mathtools.dtx v1.29 * In section `Special mathtools options` clearified when `gathered` of pure amsmath might give a warning. (#38) * Added 3.6 note 3: about \section{foo $\norm[\big]{bar}$}. * Renamed a few colon combo symbols and added a few extra for completeness. (#44) A package option is available to revert the change. * Added a warning if mathtools is loaded *after* `unicode-math` (#43) Please note that this is a **breaking** change! For many years mathtools have provided some colon related symbols, like :=. The names of which was copied from txfonts/pxfonts. It turned out that these names were inconsistent, for example \coloneq would be :- where as \coloneqq would be :=. This has now been changes such that both provides :=. Additional colon symbols have also been added. If needed, the package option legacycolonsymbols will revert the old behaviour of \coloneq, \Coloneq, \eqcolon and \Eqcolon.
This package is located at https://mirrors.ctan.org/macros/latex/contrib/mathtools More information is at https://www.ctan.org/pkg/mathtools
Thanks for the upload. For the CTAN Team Manfred Lotz CTAN is run entirely by volunteers and supported by TeX user groups. Please join a user group or donate to one, see https://ctan.org/lugs .

mathtools – Mathematical tools to use with amsmath
Mathtools provides a series of packages designed to enhance the appearance of documents containing a lot of mathematics. The main backbone is amsmath, so those unfamiliar with this required part of the LaTeX system will probably not find the packages very useful.
Mathtools provides many useful tools for mathematical typesetting. It is based on amsmath and fixes various deficiencies of amsmath and standard LaTeX. It provides:
- Extensible symbols, such as brackets, arrows, harpoons, etc.;
- Various symbols such as \coloneqq (:=);
- Easy creation of new tag forms;
- Showing equation numbers only for referenced equations;
- Extensible arrows, harpoons and hookarrows;
- Starred versions of the amsmath matrix environments for specifying the column alignment;
- More building blocks: multlined, cases-like environments, new gathered environments;
- Maths versions of \makebox, \llap, \rlap etc.;
- Cramped math styles; and more...
Mathtools requires mhsetup.
