CTAN Update: mathtools

Date: March 25, 2020 4:31:02 PM CET
Lars Madsen submitted an update to the mathtools bundle. Version: 1.24 2020-03-24 License: lppl1.3 Summary description: Mathematical tools to use with amsmath Announcement text:
* mathtools and empheq is now hosted at https://github.com/latex3/mathtools * Additional ideas for math will now be added to mathtools as amsmath might not be the right home for them at the moment. * cleared up some documentation (reported by Frank Mittelbach,, issue #1) * Explained a bit about nested \splitfrac and their need to be added \mathstrut (reported by Frank Mittelbach, issue #2) * added spaces to the arguments of \xLeftarrow, \xRightarrow and \xLeftrightarrow moving the arguments away from the large arrow head(s) (suggested by Frank Mittelbach, issue #3) * added \xmathstrut an adjustable extention to the normal \mathstrut (issue #4) * empheq: fixed several issues related to amsart/-book plus a few others (issues #5, #6 and #8)
The bundle’s Catalogue entries can be viewed at https://ctan.org/pkg/mathtools https://ctan.org/pkg/empheq https://ctan.org/pkg/mhsetup The package’s files themselves can be inspected at http://mirror.ctan.org/macros/latex/contrib/mathtools/

mathtools – Mathematical tools to use with amsmath

Mathtools provides a series of packages designed to enhance the appearance of documents containing a lot of mathematics. The main backbone is amsmath, so those unfamiliar with this required part of the system will probably not find the packages very useful.

Mathtools provides many useful tools for mathematical typesetting. It is based on amsmath and fixes various deficiencies of amsmath and standard . It provides:

  • Extensible symbols, such as brackets, arrows, harpoons, etc.;
  • Various symbols such as \coloneqq (:=);
  • Easy creation of new tag forms;
  • Showing equation numbers only for referenced equations;
  • Extensible arrows, harpoons and hookarrows;
  • Starred versions of the amsmath matrix environments for specifying the column alignment;
  • More building blocks: multlined, cases-like environments, new gathered environments;
  • Maths versions of \makebox, \llap, \rlap etc.;
  • Cramped math styles; and more...

Mathtools requires mhsetup.
