The document discusses the concepts behind, and the restrictions that affect LaTeX's use of font encodings. The document also lists several extant ‘recognised’ encodings, giving glyph tables for them.
Part of a set of documentation that also covers new LaTeX 2e commands, class and package writing, typesetting Cyrillic, font usage in LaTeX 2e, configuration options and modification of latex.
