TeX­count (ver­sion 2.1) now pro­vides more de­tailed out­put, in­clud­ing sub­counts per sec­tion or cu­mu­la­tive word counts, and the choice to out­put just the to­tal sum. The doc­u­men­ta­tion has also been im­proved, and colour keys for in­ter­pret­ing the de­tailed out­put has been added. count – Count words in a doc­u­ment

count is a Perl script that counts words in the text of files. It has rules for han­dling most of the com­mon macros, and can pro­vide colour-coded out­put show­ing which parts of the text have been counted.
